Vartan Oskanian Meets With Strobe Talbott

WASHINGTON–First Deputy Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian is currently on a working visit to Washington for a series of meetings with the State Department and White House officials.

Oskanian arrived in Washington Tuesday from New York–where he participated in the 19th Special Session of the United Nations’ General Assembly on sustainable development and made a statement before the Assembly Monday.

Oskanian met with deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott–Tuesday–where he discussed the most recent developmen’s in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. The Armenian official presented Armenia’s stand on the Karabakh issue–and expressed Armenia’s stand on the proposal of the Minsk group co-chairs. They also discussed the Denver statement released by Presidents Bill Clinton–Jacques Chirac and Boris Yeltsin.

Present at the meeting were Armenia’s Ambassador to the US Rouben Shugarian–US co-chairman of the Minsk group Lynn Pascoe and Director of the State Department Office of Caucasus and Security Affairs Steven Young.

Oskanian also met with Pascoe–at which point they discussed the proposals made by the co-chairmen.

Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s spokesperson Levon Zourabyan told a news conference Wednesday that Armenia was in agreement with the announcement issued by the presidents of the US–France and Russia on the political resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Zourabyan stated that Armenia wanted a negotiated peace involving the sides to the conflict and added that Armenia would continue its constructive participation in the talks under the auspices of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s Minsk Group chairmen.
