US Senator Robb Meets with Kocharian

YEREVAN (Azg/Noyan Tapan)–United States Senator Charles Robb (D-Ga.) arrived in Armenia Monday. The Senator is on a nine country tour including Armenia–Georgia–and Azerbaijan.

He met with Armenia’s Prime Minister Robert Kocharian–Monday–to confer about regional issues–Armenia-US relations and economic and democratic reforms in Armenia. Robb said that the interest in the region is growing because of its geographical and economic position. Speaking of the Armenia-US relations–the senator noted that the problem of Karabakh holds a special place in these relations.

Robert Kocharian–describing to the guest major trends in Armenia’s economic policy–stressed that one of the top goals of his cabinet is to promote the development of democracy in Armenia–which in its turn–would promote the development of business. He spoke in detail about the process of the Karabakh conflict settlement. He noted that there should be no unilateral concessions in this matter and the problem may be solved only through direct talks between Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan.

The meeting was attended by the First Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Vardan Oskanian–US Ambassador to Armenia Peter Tomsen.

The senator is also scheduled to meet with Minister of Trade and Industry Garnik Nanagulian–and visit a joint US-Armenia venture.

Senator Robb is the highest ranking minority member on the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee for Eastern Asia and the Pacific. He is also a member of the Economic Commission–Military Agencies Commission and the Special Investigation Commission.

Senator Robb is accompanied by Colonel Terry Paul and Peter Cleveland–member of the US Foreign Relations Committee.
