Yukalov Refutes Aliyev’s Baku Declarations

YEREVAN (Respublica Armenia/Snark)–Russian co-chairman of OSCE Minsk group Yuri Yukalov said that Baku’s reports about promises of Moscow to invade and take over territories in Karabakh–in exchange with stationing of Russian military bases in Azerbaijan–are unfounded provocation.

Yet–according to a report of the Azeri Turan agency–Aliyev made such a declaration at a meeting with former US officials in Washington.

A detailed report about the meeting was shown on the first program of the Azeri TV. Aliyev stressed that Baku refused corresponding Russian proposals and declared that the US should become a guarantor for independence of the republics of former USSR– which also meets the interests of the USA. "Russia is not ashamed to provide support to its allies in Caucasus–Azerbaijan also needs such support," the Azeri president declared.

Aliyev also declared he cannot accept the proposal of Moscow in regard with the status of the Caspian–as this would mean giving all oil of the shelf to Russia. He said that before signing the "contract of the century" in September 1994–Russia has not been raising the issue of status of the Caspian.
