Russia Azerbaijan React to Upcoming Elections in Karabakh

MOSCOW (Azg/Itar Tass)–"The negative attitude of the Russian Foreign Ministry to the presidential elections in Nagorno-Karabakh is very well known and has been expressed in the past. The Republic has not been recognized by any country of the world [except Armenia]–and the problem of its status has not been defined yet–and is a subject of negotiations within the framework of OSCE Minsk group"– head of the press service of Russian Foreign Ministry Valeri Nesterushkin declared Sunday–questioned by reporters.

"As a co-chairing country of the OSCE Minsk conference–Russian Federation hopes that the mentioned elections won’t affect negatively on the negotiations for resolution of the conflict"–Nesterushkin continued.

Azerbaijan’s central election commission in its press release Monday said the presidential election in Nagorno-Karabakh–set for September 1–would be unlawful and legally void.

The release–which described the coming election in Azerbaijan’s breakaway Armenian enclave as "so-called," said the election would be contempt of "main principles of the settlement of the Armenian-Azeri conflict that were adopted at the Lisbon summit of heads of state and governmen’s of OSCE member countries in 1996."

The election commission expressed hope that co-chairmen of the Minsk Group on Nagorno-Karabakh would take measures to avert the presidential elections.
