ATHENS (Azad Or)–A conference entitled "The Athens’ Summit 97-Democracy and Development. Europe’s Contribution to the Globalization of the Economy" was held on Aug. 29 at the Pnikay Hill overlooking the historic Acropolis.
The summit–sponsored by the Athens Sciences University–was also attended by Armenia’s National Assembly member Gegham Gharibjanian–as well as Democratic Union’s leader Vazgen Manoukian.
The following Saturday and Sunday sessions of the summit were held at the Astir Pallace Hotel–where Manoukian moderated a session entitled "Privatization and the Role of the Government."
Gharibjanian lectured during a session called the "Parliament and Its Vital Role in the Democratic Process."
Also present at the summit were Armenian Ambassador to Greece Arman Giragosian–as well as the provost of the Athens Sciences University Nikolars-Khristos Markatos–who stated that this summit intended to bring together policy makers and social scientists "in order to chart the future at the brink of the 21st century."
Greek officials present at the summit were Communication Minister Dimitris Repas and Defense Minister Akis Tsoukhadzopolous.
