Sargssian Says Armenia Will Not Betray Karabakh

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian Defense Minister Vazgen Sargssian reiterated Thursday that the settlement of the Karabakh conflict with Azerbaijan is of the utmost importance not only to Karabakh but to all the Armenian people as a whole–and that claims that Armenia would betray Karabakh were unfounded and fabricated.

"Levon Ter-Petrossyan said what he probably should have said– and Arkady Ghoukassian is saying what he probably should say," stated Sargssian regarding each leader’s public position on the matter. "The settlement of the Karabakh problem is the task of the all Armenian people–including the Armenian Diaspora."

Sargssian made his statemen’s at a press conference hastily called Thursdays in light of Ter-Petrossyan’s unpopular statemen’s regarding settlement of the Karabakh conflict. Sargssian noted that the Karabakh problem "was brought about by the people as a whole–and it must be solved by the people as a whole without placing responsibility on individual people."

Sargssian said the single will of the people was strong–and voiced confidence that "when the time comes the people will find leaders to execute its will.

"I think that the time has not come yet. There are still many steps to take in the political–economic and military spheres. The slogan of today’s realities is to pass these steps consistently–point after point."

Sargssian went on to say his wish to the heroic–beloved people of Karabakh was that they not believe Armenia had or would betray them.
