Ter Petrosyan Aliyev Meet Agree to Summit

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Levon Ter-Petrosyan and Gaidar Aliyev upon meeting in Strasbourg for the European Union Assembly issued a joint statement Saturday–stressing their continued committment to the resolution of the Karabakh conflict–by way of political negotiations–reported ANS-press.

According to the two officials–a resolution to the conflict will be possible only when all sides to the conflict adopt a constructive posture toward the end of the conflict.

Azeri Foreign Minister Hassan Hassnov announced following the statement that the two officials agreed on the statement upon examining the most recent proposals of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s Minsk Group.

Also–the Armenian and Azeri officials announced that they welcome plans by the French-Russian co-chairs to hold a new negotiating round in Moscow.

Yerevan and Baku–according to spokespeople–consider the latest OSCE proposals hopeful and presume that they will serve as the basis for renewed negotiations.

The assembly of the European Union ended in Strasbourg Saturday.

Armenia–Georgia–Azerbaijan and Bosnia-Herzegovina participated with the status of a special guest–whereas the US–Canada–and Japan were represented as special guests.

Levon Ter-Petrosyan held a speech on the final day of the assembly. He stressed that Armenia completely shares the goals of the Assembly in regard with human rights and democracy. This especially applies to the role of civil society–free media–respecting the rights of minorities.

After the end of the assembly Ter-Petrosyan and the official delegation of Armenia left for Paris with a four day visit–to meet with the French President–Prime Minister–Chairman of the National Assembly and Foreign Minister.
