STEPANAKERT (Azg daily)–Upon the initiative of Acting Chairman Emma Gabrielian–a session of the Karabakh National Assembly was held Tuesday to elect Oleg Yesayan as Chairman of the Karabakh National Assembly.
Yesayan’s candidacy was approved by a 27-4 vote.
The 51-year-old Yesayan–an economist by training–was elected to the post which had been vacant since former speaker Artur Tovmasian stepped down following his poor showing in the September 2 presidential election.
Yesayan was elected to the Nagorno-Karabakh parliament only two weeks ago in a by-election. He was also the region’s prime minister for nine months in 1992.
The election comes on the heels of Armenian First Deputy Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian’s arrival in Stepanakert Tuesday night to discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process behind closed doors with the leadership of the unrecognized republic.
