Rizhkov Says Lives May be Threatened

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–In an interview with the head of the Russian Federation’s Deputy Group and coordinator of the Deputy Group on affairs with the Armenian Assembly–Nikolay Rizhkov–Rizhkov said lives in Karabakh may be threatened if things do not change.

"The main area of importance with regards to Karabakh is for peace to exist in Karabakh. For politics as well as for the doctors there is only one principle aspect to be followed – their activity should not harm a patient. One careless step will threaten lives and the well-being of hundreds of thousands of people.

"As I was informed during the meeting with the authorities of Nagorno Karabakh–they are ready to exert every effort to finding a solution to the problem. They are sure that it may be achieved only by direct negotiations among all the conflicting parties–including Karabakh–of course. And they are right. The solution to the problem found through direct negotiations will be more stable and proper than that one dictated abroad.

Asked about his views on Russia’s involvement in the Karabakh peace process–Rizhkov felt the country should get involved quickly and thoroughly.

"I feel Russia is interested in prompt solution of the conflict–while we stand for protection of interests of all the conflicting parties but not the interests of outside forces. The position of the US–which in fact is trying to settle the conflict as soon as possible and start implementing its strategic programs in the region–is clear for us.

"As I was informed–the authorities of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic do not trust the "stage-by-stage" regulation of the conflict–which foresees some compromises to be done by Karabakh but which will not affect the security of Karabakh’s population. However–I think that the issues and deman’s proposed by the Azeri side are to be considered as well.

"It is obvious–that the implementation of the proposals of the OSCE Minsk Group may result in internal destabilization in Armenia at the very moment when Armenia and Russia are on their way to integration."
