Melkoumian Urges Dialogue with Azerbaijan

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Stepanakert hopes for the world community to be able to convince the Azeri leadership to hold direct talks with Nagorno-Karabakh–Foreign Minister of Nagorno-Karabakh Naira Melkoumian told the Interfax Agency last week.

Melkoumian stated that the world community must abandon the policy of double standards and demand that Baku begin dialogue with Stepanakert–similar to what the contact group of foreign ministers did when they demanded that Belgrade "begin a serious dialogue with Kosovo," reported Radio Liberty.

Melkoumian argued that it will be a serious mistake on behalf of the world community to continue to overestimate the role of Armenia in the Karabakh settlement. "Geopolitcally–Nagorno-Karabakh is the region’s independent entity and to ignore its potential will put off settlement prospects." The official strongly felt that Karabakh is maintaining the balance of forces in the region and that it can become a bridge connecting Armenia and Azerbaijan in the future.
