US to Assist in Renovation of Drinking Water System

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The Armenian Finance and Economy Ministry and the US Trade and Development Agency signed an agreement Wednesday–according to which the Agency will provide a $224,000 grant to the Finance Ministry in the form of technical assistance.

The grant will be used to prepare for the $25 million program for reconstruction of the drinking-water system in Armenia implemented by the World Bank. This World Bank loan program plans the renovation of the Yerevan water system first.

Armenian Finance and Economy Minister Armen Darbinian expressed his gratitude to the US government for the continuation of wide-scale assistance to the Armenian government–the funding of the infrastructures in particular. He voiced hope that productive cooperation will continue between the Armenian government and the TDA.

US Ambassador to Armenia Peter Tomsen pointed out that this is TDA’s third program in Armenia. The first one was a preparation for the program for energy production and communication lines–and the second was preparation for the search for oil in Armenia.

The TDA is a small state-run agency and focuses on the preparation work for major projects. It mostly implemen’s its programs in developing states.
