Clinton Congratulates Kocharian

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–President Robert Kocharian met on Friday with United States Ambassador to Armenia Peter Tomsen. At the meeting–Ambassador Tomsen delivered a message of congratulation from President Bill Clinton.

"I congratulate you upon your election as President of the Republic of Armenia," the letter read.

"The United States will continue to closely cooperate with Armenia to boost the already existing comprehensive relations between our countries. Our country will further help Armenia to build a free market and democratic state," the letter continued.

President Clinton also stated that the US endorses the OSCE report that the presidential elections in Armenia were another step towards a functioning democracy in Armenia–and called upon Kocharian to "seriously consider" recommendations for election reform.

President Clinton said the US is ready to cooperate with Armenia and its neighbors in establishing peace in the Caucasus region. He told Kocharian that his victory gives "new impetus" to the earliest resolution of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh.

In conclusion–President Clinton said that he expects to work closely with "you and your government and hope that together we shall achieve peace–stability and welfare in the Caucasus."
