Russian Military Convoy Attacked in Northern Caucasus

MOSCOW (BBC)–Four Russian officers–among them a general–have been killed in an attack on a Russian military convoy in the republic of Ingushetia in the Northern Caucasus.

Gunmen opened fire as the convoy left the main Russian base in the region. Russian Deputy Interior Minister–Sergey Stephashin–has blamed the attack on armed groups from neighboring Chechnya.

The BBC Moscow correspondent said the attack was one of the worst on Russian soldiers in the area–where Russia has maintained a strong military presence since ending a war with Chechen separatists almost two years ago.

The general killed has been named as Viktor Prokopenko of the Russian General Staff.
