Hurriyet Claims Chirac Disapproval of Armenian Bill

ISTANBUL (Marmara)–The Turkish daily newspaper "Hurriyet" reporter Muhammer Elveren reportedly met with French President Jacques Chirac to discuss the Armenian Genocide recognition bill to be discussed by the French Senate. Elveren alleged that the French president said he postponed his September visit to Armenia due to his disapproval of the Genocide bill.

The Turkish reporter mentioned that numerous French parliamentarians disapproved of the bill and therefore did not attend the parliament session which passed the bill which is to be discussed by the Senate.

According to those parliament members–Elveren said–Chirac was gravely disappointed by the bill but was unable to stop its passage. The government does not support or endorse the Armenian Genocide recognition bill and will postpone it until it is no longer on the agenda–Elveren reported.

Elveren also said that Chirac did not wish to further expand on the issue but hoped to convey to the Turkish people his respect and greetings. Chirac reportedly said that despite pressure from other countries–he has always defended Turkey and supported its acceptance in the European Union.
