International Symposium to Mark Earthquake Anniversary

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–An international scientific symposium–to take place in early Fall– has been organized in Armenia as the republic will mark the tenth anniversary of the Spitak earthquake.

News about this meeting was obtained from a newspaper invited by the National Seismology Department. The head of the Department–Sergei Palasanyan stated that this symposium is of utter importance and that is why it was organized under the auspices of the government of Armenia and theUnited Nations.

The symposium is made up of three parts. The first part will look at an increase in earthquake awareness which started as a direct result of the awesome disaster of the 1988 earthquake. The second portion will consist of reports on professional advances in the field.

Finally–the third segment of the program will be on the prevention of and response to natural disasters.

The symposium will for the first time be open to the public–and concerned citizens will have an opportunity to receive pertinent information on the subject.

More than 34 countries will participate in the symposium.
