YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– A symposium dedicated to the 90th birthday anniversary of prominent Armenian scientist Academician Victor Hambartsumian started August 17 in Yerevan. Astronomers and astrophysicists from all over the world will make reports on the main subject of the symposium–"Activity in galaxies and related phenomena."
Hambartsumian is known to have put forward an idea of the activity of galaxies in 1950s. Before that time scientists thought that galaxies were formed billions of years ago and no active changes take place in them.
But Hambartsumian believed that great changes in the evolution of galaxies take place in the central parts of the galaxies. At present this theory was confirmed by numerous explorations conducted by the world’s biggest observatories including the Byurakan observatory.
