US to Help Armenia Improve Border Control

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– The Department of Defense and Customs Office of the US developed a joint program aimed at assisting Armenia in reaching the highest technical level of control at border checkpoints. During a meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian–the American government delegation led by Senior Foreign Affairs Advisor Harlan Straus presented this program. The delegation also included representatives of the US Customs Office and Department of State.

Under the program Armenia’s Customs Office and other relevant bodies will be supplied with up-to-date equipment–which will make it possible to prevent any attempt of illegal cross-border transportation of substances used in weapons of mass destruction–the public relations department of the Armenian Foreign Ministry reported. This high-tech equipment will not only make it possible to disclose attempts of smuggling but also–by pressing a button–establish the composition of substances–customs code and the customs duty which should be paid. The program also provides for retraining of Armenian specialists in the USA.

Oskanian promised that he will study the program in all seriousness and discuss it with relevant bodies of Armenia.
