National Assembly Speaker Welcomes US Ambassador

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"During the past few–difficult years Armenia has always appreciated the benevolent attitude of the United States. The activities of the US Embassy is a kind of bridge between the two nations," the speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia–Khosrov Haroutiunian said on September 29–at a reception for the US Ambassador to Armenia–Michael Lemmon.

Congratulating the ambassador upon the start of his diplomatic mission in Armenia–Haroutiunian pointed out that relations between the National Assembly and US ambassadors are traditionally warm and businesslike–based on common approaches towards regional and other processes.

The sides referred to the importance of the processes of regional integration as well as other approaches in settling conflicts which are acceptable to all sides. Haroutiunian presented Armenia’s position on the Karabakh issue–stressing the need for direct talks between the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and Azerbaijan within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group.

The sides also reportedly discussed issues pertaining to the election code–the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia and the role of major political forces in the life of the country.
