Azeri English Language Paper Pulls First Edition

BAKU (Reuters)–The American publisher of Azerbaijan’s first English-language newspaper said on Monday he had pulled the debut issue from news stands after government officials complained about the contents.

The English-language Baku Sun–published by American James Phillipoff–appeared last week and is aimed at the thousands of foreigners working and living in the former Soviet republic.

The front page of the first issue featured the headlines "(Azeri President Haydar) Aliyev Vows to Keep Order" and "Humans Retreat as Azerbaijan’s Rat Population Flourishes" accompanied by a picture of people sifting through a garbage dump.

Phillipoff said that soon after the newspaper hit the streets–he received a telephone call from officials at the Azeri Communications Ministry who complained about the articles.
