Patriarchal Elections Set to Begin

ISTANBUL (Marmara)–The controversial and much-delayed election process for a patriarch in Istanbul was scheduled to begin Friday with the convention of the Assembly of Churches.

The first step requires the election of delegates to the Religious Council and 10 delegates to the National Representative Assembly–scheduled to convene Wednesday.

On Sunday–each parishioner will vote for a lay delegate–the lists of which have been divided into Arch. Shahan Svadjian’s and Locum Tenens Arch. Mesrob Mutafyan’s supporters.

The elections will take place in local neighborhoods with the results scheduled to be announced late Sunday night.

The election of a new patriarch will take place Wednesday–when the National Representative Assembly will convene at the Patriarchate.
