Oskanian Meets With Council of Europe Delegation

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenia’s foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian met with a delegation of the European Council Parliamentary Assembly Wednesday–headed by its chairman Ernst Mulhemen.

Armenia’s membership in the EC was a topic of discussion at the meeting–at which time–Mulhemen’said that the EC was closely monitoring developmen’s in the Caucasus and emphasized the importance of advancing democratic and economic reforms in the region.

Oskanian outlined Armenia’s commitment in furthering democratic reforms in Armenia–through corresponding changes in law to conform with EC standards.

Oskanian stressed that unresolved conflicts in the region should not deter the EC on making membership expansion decisions.

At the same time–Oskanian also praised the recent advances by the EC in taking a more active role in the conflict resolution process.

The foreign minister placed importance on an upcoming meeting in Strasbourg of the EC Parliamentary Assembly–where the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is scheduled to dominate the agenda. He assured the EC delegation that both Armenia and Karabakh were willing to demonstrate the necessary flexibility in resolving the Karabakh conflict.

At the request of the visiting delegation–Oskanian outlined other aspects of Armenia’s foreign policy–including the strengthening of Armenia-Diaspora relations.
