Azerbaijan Urges NATO to Stop Arming Armenia

BAKU (Itar-Tass)–Azeri President Haydar Aliyev Saturday called on NATO countries to make "serious efforts" to prevent the "militarization of Armenia" and claimed that Russia was "arming Armenia against" the North Atlantic alliance.

Aliyev made his call at a meeting with a delegation of NATO’s auxiliary committee for expansion and the new democratic states.

He urged NATO to use its influence with the leaders of its member-countries in order for them to take more serious steps against the so-called militarization of Armenia.

"If Russia is arming Armenia against NATO–this should make you think," he told the delegation.

Aliyev cited "unofficial discussions with Russian representatives" who–he claimed–had told him that Moscow was supplying weapons to Armenia not against Azerbaijan–but against NATO.

Azerbaijan has made a point of making absurd accusations–such as the aforementioned–in order to cast doubt on Armenian efforts for a peaceful resolution to the Karabakh conflict.
