Iran Denies Azeri Allegations of Espionage

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Azerbaijan issued an announcement Thursday calling "blasphemous" recent reports in the Azeri "Yeni Azerbaijan" and "Khalq" newspapers which claimed that Iran had stepped up its intelligence activity in Azerbaijan.

The newspapers claimed Iran was spending an upward of $14 million to increase its spies in Azerbaijan.

The Iranian Embassy stressed that such faulty announcemen’s were politically motivated and aimed at creating schism between Iran and Azerbaijan.

The Embassy further explained that Iran only sent humanitarian assistance to Azerbaijan with the aim of strengthening relations between two muslim states.

Iran’s assistance–the embassy explained–was allocated toward aiding refugees and the poor.
