Armenia Diaspora Conference Scheduled for September in Armenia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–President Robert Kocharian signed a decree Thursday concerning the organization of the Pan-Armenian Conference in September 1999. This conference will deal with Armenia-Diaspora relations–presidential spokesman Vahe Gabrielian told a news briefing on Thursday.

According to Gabrielian–under the presidential decree a governmental commission responsible for the preparation of the conference will be set up. The commission’s co-chairmen will be defense minister Vazgen Sargssian and foreign minister Vardan Oskanian. Members of the commission are ministers of sciences and education–culture–the president of the National Academy of Sciences–the ambassadors of Britain–USA and Russia–chairman of the Pan-Armenian "Hayastan" Fund and other officials. Also different organizations of Armenia and Diaspora–representatives of the Armenian Apostolic Church–Armenian Evangelist and Armenian Catholic churches will be involved in the commission’s activities.

Asked what prompted the president to appoint defense minister Vazgen Sargssian a co-chairman of the commission–the presidential spokesman noted that "Vazgen Sargssian expressed willingness to bring his strength and capacities to serve this patriotic idea."

Gabrielian noted that the commission will not determine the concept of relations between Armenia and Diaspora–but submit its proposals concerning this problem to the conference.
