PACE Chairman Backs Armenian Parliament Chairman’s Initiative

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe lord Russel Johnston supported the Armenian Parliament Chairman Khosrov Haroutiunian’s initiative to hold a meeting between parliament chairmen of the three Transcaucasian countries. In a letter addressed to Haroutiunian–the PACE Chairman invited the Armenian National Assembly Speaker to attend the first meeting scheduled in Strasbourg for March 15.

Lord Russel Johnston voiced confidence that such arrangemen’s will allow issues pertaining to prospects of regional cooperation and the role of parliamen’s in these processes to be addressed. According to him–such initiative may promote the building of confidence between the conflicting sides and serve as a basis for regional cooperation.

Johnston also said that speakers of Georgian and Azerbaijani parliamen’s have already agreed to participate in the meeting.
