Ghoukassian Meets With Members of Congress

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Nagorno Karabakh President Arkady Ghoukassian held a number of meetings in Washington on March 9.

He met with chairman of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Appropriations–Senator Mitch McConnel. During the meeting the two reviewed the current state of the Karabakh peace process and its prospects.

US humanitarian aid to Nagorno Karabakh was also among the issues discussed. McConnel assured the Karabakh president that the US would continue its aid to Nagorno Karabakh.

The Karabakh delegation also met with US Congressman Stenny Hoyer–member of the House of Representatives Committee for Cooperation with the OSCE.

Ghoukassian presented Karabakh’s standpoint on the Karabakh conflict resolution. Discussed were also US financial assistance to Nagorno Karabakh and Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act banning direct US aid to Azerbaijan.

The same day–Karabakh Foreign Minister Naira Melkoumian spoke at the Carnegie Institute to experts in political science. She gave a report on Nagorno Karabakh’s security in the context of subregional security.

After the speech–which aroused great interest from the audience–the minister gave thorough answers to numerous questions regarding the Karabakh peace process and the role of Nagorno Karabakh as a political factor in the region. The Carnegie Institute President thanked Melkoumian for the all-embracing presentation of factors of regional security in the South Caucasus.

The Karabakh delegation continues its US visit.
