Bleyan Charged With Embezzlement

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The prosecutor general office Wednesday charged Armenia’s former minister of education Ashot Bleyan with misconduct and embezzlement of large sums of funds–while he served as the country’s education head.

Yerevan city prosecutor Armen Tamazyan told Armenpress that Bleyan was questioned Tuesday by the prosecutor’s office–and in lieu of imprisonment he has signed affidavit ensuring that he would not leave the country.

The investigation into the education system revealed massive misappropriations–misconduct and embezzlement of large sums of funds–for which criminal charges have been filed.

The Wednesday edition of Oragir reported that a defense committee for Bleyan has already been established and 1,700 signatures have ben collected in his favor.

Bleyan–a close ally of ousted president Levon Ter-Petrosyan–gained notoriety in when he led a delegation to Baku–at the height of the Karabakh self-defense struggle–preaching concessions by Armenia.

Furthermore–in 1995–during the 80th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide–Bleyan announced that the education ministry would remove the genocide from all public school curriculum–since the new generation of Armenia’s needed to learn about "happier" matters.
