Kocharian Oskanian Meet With Russian Officials

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian President Robert Kocharian met late last week with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Leonid Drachevsky and Head of the 4th Department for CIS Affairs–Russian Foreign Ministry–Nikolay Gribkov. The sides discussed the current situation and possible developmen’s in the Karabakh negotiating process.

President Kocharian stressed that Armenia remains faithful to its position of seeking peaceful means of settling the conflict within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group on a mutually acceptable basis. The sides stressed the need for finding ways of resuming negotiations as well as the importance of dialogue between the parties concerned.

It was underlined once again that the Armenian-Russian military cooperation is carried out under interstate and intergovernmental agreemen’s and is not directed against any other country.

Attending the meeting were Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian–Russian Ambassador to Armenia Anatoly Dryukov and other officials.

Oskanian met with Drachevsky and Gribkov on Saturday.

The sides reportedly discussed the current state of the Nagorno Karabakh peace process and ways to resume talks. Referring to the importance of the OSCE Minsk Group’s mediatory mission–Drachevsky confirmed the position of the three co-chairs based on principle to find a comprehensive solution to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict acceptable to all parties involved and not imposed on them. At the same time–he pointed out that the Minsk Group co-chairmen are ready to discuss new proposals and initiatives of the sides and be instrumental in their realization.

Oskanian referred to the constructive position of the Armenian side to get the negotiating process back on track basing on the latest proposals of the OSCE Minsk Group.

The sides exchanged views on the latest developmen’s around Kosovo and their possible impact on international relations.

They agreed to make working consultations between the foreign ministries of Russia and Armenia more frequent.

The same day Leonid Drachevsky and Nikolay Gribkov met Nagorno Karabakh Foreign Minister Naira Melkoumian–who was on a working visit to Yerevan. The meeting reportedly discussed prospects for the Karabakh conflict resolution as well as a range of problems of regional concern.
