Baku Signals Kocharian Aliyev Meeting in Moscow

BAKU (Armenpress)–Sources in Azerbaijan indicated that a meeting between Azeri president Haydar Aliyev and Armenian president Robert Kocharian could take place during the summit of CIS leaders scheduled to convene in Moscow Thursday.

The meeting would be mediated by Russia and attended by its president Boris Yeltsin–who hinted at such a meeting in his recent letter to Aliyev–who will lead the Azeri delegation to the summit.

Itar-Tass reported that Aliyev would present his country’s objection to the so-called arming of Armenia–referring to recent shipmen’s of Russian military equipment in its effort to modernize its military base in Armenia.

The Armenian delegation led by president Robert Kocharian left for Moscowto attend a meeting of the CIS heads of state. The delegation includes prime minister Armen Darbinian–defense minister Vazgen Sargssian–foreign minister Vardan Oskanian–Armenia’s representative to CIS bodies–Armenia’s ambassador to Belarus Souren Haroutiunian and other officials.

The meeting of the CIS heads of state is supposed to address problems of improvement and restructuring of CIS organs. CIS heads of state are also expected to come up with a joint declaration on basic principles of CIS activity. The concept of cooperation in combating crime in CIS countries will also be addressed during the meeting.

Presidents of CIS-member countries are to discuss a protocol on changes and additions to the April 15 1994 agreement on the free trade zone. The CIS heads of state will also make a decision on preparations for celebration of the 55th anniversary ofWorld War II.
