CIS Security Agreement Concerns Air Defense

YEREVAN (Itar-Tass)–The defense system within the CIS treaty on collective security operates mainly in the sphere of air defense– while the other aspects are rather symbolic–Armenian Defense Minister Vazgen Sargsyan said in an interview with the Armenian newspaper Haiastani Hanrapetutiun Wednesday.

According to Sargsyan–Russia–especially in the light of recent developmen’s–is inclined to strengthen and renovate its air defense systems in Armenia and other interested countries–Kazakhstan– Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

The minister expressed confidence that the countries which have signed the treaty would be equipped with strong systems of air defense.

The systems are very important for Armenia–he stressed.

Commenting on Azeri President Haydar Aliyev’s recent statemen’s on Russian weapons supplies to Armenia–Sargsyan noted that Azerbaijan had been also arming itself. According to the minister–Baku purchases weaponry from Turkey–Ukraine and other countries.

Sargsyan described as "impossible" the establishment of a Turkish military base in Azerbaijan–since it would break the balance in the region where interests of many countries intersect.
