Capitol Hill Genocide Observance Held

WASHINGTON–More than 250 Congressional leaders–staffers–diplomatic representatives and community members attended the Armenian Genocide Observance on Capitol Hill Wednesday evening at the Gold Room of the House Rayburn building.

The event was co-sponsored by the Armenian National Committee of America–ANCA-Western and Eastern regions and more than 60 representatives and senators.

Representatives from the Greek–Cypriot and Ukrainian embassies–joined their counterparts from the Armenian Embassy in Washington in marking this important event on the Hill.

A program marking the 84th anniversary of the Genocide was presented.

Master of Ceremonies Kirk Kashian–chairman of the Michigan ANC–outlined the importance of the Genocide to the Armenian community and introduced the speakers which included ANCA board chairman Mourad Topalian–Armenia’s Ambassador to the US Rouben Shugarian–Karabakh Public Affairs office Executive Director Tevan Poghossian and the Executive Director of the Armenian Assembly of America Ross Vartian.

Those presentations were followed by statemen’s of support and recognition by members of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Among the Congressional participants at the observance were–senators Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.)–Carl Levin (D-Mich.)–Charles Robb (D-Va.)–Paul Sarbanes (D- Md.)–Abraham Spencer (R-Mich.)–Richard Durbin (D-Ill.)–Jack Reed (D-RI) and represnetatives Tom Allen (D-Maine)–Robert Andrews (D-NJ)–Thomas Billey (R-Va.)–David Boinor (D-Mich.)–Lois Capps (D-Calif.)–Michael Capuano (D-Mass.)–Joseph Crowley (D-NY)–William Delahunt (D-Mass.)–John Dingell (D-Miss.)–Bob Filner (D-Calif.)–Frank Barney (D-Mass.)–Benjamin Gilman (R-NY)–Steve Horn (R-Calif.)–Patrick Kennedy (D-RI)–Joe Knollenberg (R-Miss.)–Nita Lowey (D-NY)–James McGovern (D-Mass.)–Michael McNulty (D-NY)–Martin Meehan (D-Mass.)–Robert Menendez (D-NJ)–Constance Morella (R-Md.)–Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.)–Frank Pallone (D-NJ)–George Radanovich (R-Calif.)–Steven Rothman (D-NJ)–Brad Sherman (D-Calif.)–John Sweeny (R-NY)–John Tirney (D-Mass)–and Peter Visclocky (D-Ind.). The Russian Embassy was also present.

A special order marking the Armenian Genocide also took place on the House floor Wednesday with several Congressional leaders submitting their statemen’s into the Congressional record.
