Pilibos Wins Gold Medal at LA County Science Fair

LOS ANGELES–The Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian school achieved impressive results in the high competitive Los Angeles County Science Fair–which took place on April 21 at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

The 844 students from LA County public and private schools that participated in the fair–exhibited projects ranging from behavioral/social sciences to engineering and biochemistry research.

Pilibos was represented by eight students–six of whom received medals and honorable mentions.

Ninth grader Thomas Abrahamian won a gold medal in engineering research and a scholarship from Earth Watch. Fellow ninth graders Krikor Boyrazyan and Maggie Kirkian won silver medals in the microbiology and physics and astronomy categories respectively.

Caroline Minassian–an 11th grade student–won an honorable mention and special recognition for best independent project. Honorable mentions also went to ninth graders Amir Kassouha and Aram Zakian for botany and engineering research respectively.

The three top students will go on to compete in the California State Science Fair–scheduled for May 24.

"We are very proud of our students and science department," said Pilibos principal Viken Yacoubian–who added–"Once again–these results indicate that our school is competing with and surpassing the best in Los Angeles."
