Sentences Reduced in Ter Sahakian Case

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Court of Appeal reduced by one year the sentences passed upon two defendants in the case the came from the Ter-Sahakian case–Armen Sindoyan and Derenik Khourshudian. The sitting of the court chaired by Mhe1r Agramanian and attended by judges Sevak Hambartsumian and Zhora Hovsepian decided to sentence the two defendants to four years of imprisonment.

Regarding as proven that Hovhannes Gabrielian–Mher Galstian–Gurgen Manoukian–Samvel Chaboukhian–Araik Hakobian–Haikaz Ashkhatoyan–Armen Sindoyan–and Derenik Khourshudian were the members of Ter-Sahakian’s gang–the court took into consideration the fact that the two last named were not accomplices in other crimes committed by the gang. As for Derenik Khourshudian–the court took into account his repentance and confession as well as his age (61) and poor health. At the same time the Court of Appeal did not change the verdict returned by the court of original jurisdiction and sentencing Araik Hakobian to 8 years of imprisonment–Samvel Chaboukhian–Hovhannes Gabrielian–Mher Galstian and Gurgen Manoukian to 7 years of imprisonment–and Haikaz Ashkhatoyan to 5 years of imprisonment.

The court of original jurisdiction of Yerevan’s Shengavit borough regarded as completely proven the charges of gangsterism brought against eight defendants in the case separated from the Ter-Sahakian case. According to the court verdict–the members of Armen Ter-Sahakian’s gang–which consisted of armed groups and had a meeting-place–carrying out the orders of the gang leader–brought the victims to the meeting-place–held them to ransom and subjected to beatings–endangering their life and health.

Regarding as baseless the charge of gangsterism brought against two of the defendants–Artak Hakobian and Esma Zakarian–the court of original jurisdiction re-qualified it in accordance with count 84 of the Criminal Code (misprision of felony) and point 3 of count 17-94 (complicity to racketeering).
