Armenia Among Countries Cleared for WTO Membership

WASHINGTON–The US House of Representatives Ways & Means Committee–Trade Subcommittee last week decided to clear the way for Armenia’s membership in the World Trade Organization.

Joining Armenia in this roster of former Soviet republics are Georgia–Estonia–Moldova and Lithuania.

Trade Subcommittee chairwoman Susan Esserman told a Congressional hearing that membership in the WTO would greatly enhance the member-states’ ability to institute reforms and integrate within the international business community.

This recommendation–which excluded Russia’s petition for membership–is deemed as a harsh criticism by the US Congress of Russian business practices and may contribute to the current murky relations between the US and Russia.
