Aliyev Reiterates Rejection of OSCE Plan

BAKU (Noyan Tapan)–Azeri president Haydar Aliyev–once again–reiterated his country’s rejection of a peace plan put forth by the Minsk Group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. This latest rejection came during a meeting visiting British members of parliament.

"Announcemen’s by members of the British parliament attest to the United Kingdom’s interest in a just resolution for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," said Aliyev who voiced his rejection of the OSCE Minsk plan.

Aliyev said that Baku wanted a peaceful resolution to the conflict–but demanded that the so-called occupied territories be returned to Azerbaijan.

The British delegation leader Bryce George told Aliyev that–upon their return to England–the parliament would be briefed on the Azeri position on the peace process.

The delegation is in Baku on a fact-finding mission–in order to set a more clear policy toward Azebraijan.

George said while the OSCE was the entity entrusted with the peace process efforts–he hoped that suggestions by Great Britain could enhance that process and establish security in the region.

Meanwhile–Tehran Times reported that Azerbaijan reportedly asked the Islamic Republic’s mediation to settle Karabakh conflict.

Political Counselor at the Armenian Embassy Garnik Badalian talking to Tehran Times said–"Well–I don’t know about Azeri request to Iran."

But another diplomat confirmed that such a request from Azerbaijan exists and ‘most probably Iran will renew its efforts for mediation between the two republics for the sake of peace and stability in the region.

When asked whether he thought the current visit of Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi to Armenia was to mediate between the two former Soviet republics–the diplomat said "May be and may not be."

"We have to wait and see the results of Kharrazi’s talks in Yerevan," the diplomat said.
