Armenia Best Route for Transcaspian Pipeline

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan). A study conducted for the route of the Transcaspian gas pipeline found transport via Armenia the most sensible for this politically significant endeavor–reported Deputy Minister of Energy Karen Galustian.

According to Galustian–the cost of pipeline installation through Armenia will be $0.8 billion. Recent press publications in Georgia suggest that the installation of a gas pipeline via Georgia will cost $3 billion.

The leaders of Turkey–Turkmen’stan–Georgia and Azerbaijan are due to meet on September 17-18 in Ankara to sign an agreement regarding the installation of pipeline–and to clarify the parties’ commitmen’s.

However an agreement seems unlikely. Azeri sources report vice-president of the state-run Oil Company Ilkham Aliyev (President Aliyev’s son) has recently declared Azerbaijan’s unwillingness to sign such an unresolved document..
