New US Karabakh Negotiator Visits Baku

BAKU (Noyan Tapan)–Newly assigned US negotiator on Nagorno-Karabakh Carey Cavanaugh arrived in Baku Wednesday on a two-day fact-finding mission.

During talks–Azeri foreign minister Tofik Zulfugarov expressed hope that the new negotiator–who is also the US co-chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group–will play a unique role in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict peace process.

Zulfugarov added that the recent meeting between Armenia and Azeri presidents in Geneva have created optimism for a peaceful resolution to the conflict–and now the sides must determine to what extent mutual concessions will be made.

Cavanaugh said that his visit to the region was a fact-finding mission and an opportunity for him to acquaint himself–in order to report to US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on the current situation and future prospects.

"I am encouraged by the inroads made in the peace talks–following the Kocharian-Aliyev I have great hope on the talks," Cavanaugh said.
