South Caucasus Parliament Speakers to Meet in Germany

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–The parliamentary speakers of Armenia–Azerbaijan and Georgia will meet in Berlin on 6 September on the sidelines of official ceremonies to mark the 50th anniversary of the German federal parliament–a visiting Bundestag deputy said in Yerevan on 1 September.

According to Christa Loecher–the three speakers – Armenia’s Karen Demirchian–Azerbaijan’s Murtuz Alesqerov and Georgia’s Zurab Zhvania – will be brought together by Bundestag President Wolfgang Thierse. Loecher–who chairs a Bundestag committee on the South Caucasus–said the unresolved Karabakh conflict will be one of the subjects discussed.

Last month–the speaker of the French Senate proposed hosting a similar meeting of South Caucasus parliament speakers in Paris.

Demirchian’s participation in the Berlin meeting will be his first foreign trip since his appointment in early June.
