Armenia to Name New Ambassador in Washington

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–Armenia’s longtime ambassador to the United States–Ruben Shugarian–will soon be replaced by the head of the Armenian diplomatic mission in Greece–Ambassador Arman Kirakosian–a senior foreign ministry official said on Tuesday. The official told RFE/RL that Kirakosian will take over the job in October or November.

Shugarian–who has held the post since 1992–is one of Armenia’s longest-serving ambassadors in a single country. Formerly a close associate of Levon Ter-Petrosyan–he was widely expected to be recalled to Yerevan following the latter’s ouster from power in February 1998.
