Hearing of Vano Siradeghian Case Postponed Again

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The hearing of the "Vano Siradeghian plus others" case has been postponed until October 25. The court satisfied the petition for time to be provided to Siradeghian’s counsel to allow defense attorney Seryozha Shahverdian to study the 42 volumes of the criminal case. The other four attorneys–Ruben Rshtuni–Narine Rshtuni–Tigran Janoyan and Anahit Chilingarian have not yet signed contracts with the defendant. Nor has it been finally decided whether Siradeghian will want them to defend him in court.

The court also confirmed Senior Prosecutor–Department for Defense of Prosecution in Courts–Prosecutor’s Office of Armenia–Vardkes Gevorgian as a fourth prosecutor. At its last sitting the court satisfied the petition of the defense about the rejection of the candidacy of Head of the same department–Armen Ashrafian.

The court rejected the petition presented by Attorney Sos Mkrtichian for a change of preventive punishment imposed on the defendant Haik Aghajanian for reason of health–advancing reasons that no corresponding documen’s were place at the court’s disposal–therefore–the petition was groundless.

The representatives of the victims–the father of the murdered Karen Rafaelian–Mais Rafaelian–and the brother of the murdered head of the Ashtarak District Executive Committee Hovhannes Sukiassian–Haroutiun Sukiassian–expressed dissatisfaction with the unequal preventive punishmen’s imposed on the defendants: only one of 12 defendants–ANM Board Chairman–Parliament member Vano Siradeghian is not kept in a cell. The victims’ relatives expressed the opinion that Siradeghian’s search for a new attorney is nothing but an attempt to buy time.

Before court–the atmosphere in the courtroom was extremely tense. When Siradeghian came in–the victims’ relatives began insulting and cursing him. Warnings and persuasions by the guards helped to restore order in the courtroom.
