Oskanian Leads Delegation to Canada

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– A delegation led by Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian held a meeting with Canada’s Foreign Minister Lloyd Ackworthy–September 29. Key points addressed during the meeting were – deeper bilateral relations–cooperation within international structures and broader economic partnership. Both sides shared the opinion that there are ample possibilities and untapped potential to develop versatile relations.

The same day Oskanian reportedly met with Canada’s Vice-Premier Herbert Gray to discuss the possibilities of carrying out joint economically lucrative programs. In particular–the Armenian side appreciated Canadian investmen’s in a number of economic spheres of Armenia.

Oskanian also met with the speaker of the Canadian parliament Guildas Molgat. Both sides stressed the need for deeper interparliamentary ties.

The meeting with the President of the Canadian International Agency for Development–Jean-Mark Matthew resulted in a number of specific agreemen’s on cooperation in the mining–agricultural–energy and chemical industries. The main points of Canadian assistance to Armenia were outlined.

Meetings were also held in Toronto – with officials of the State of Quebec–the cities of Toronto and Montreal. The delegation attended ceremonial events organized by the local Armenian community in connection with the 8th anniversary of the declaration of Armenia’s independence.

Separate meetings were held with officials of the Regional Department of Toronto and Montreal of the Trade Council of Canadian Armenia’s. Possibilities of expanding the involvement of Canadian businessmen in the Armenian economy were considered within the context of the Armenia-Diaspora Forum.

On September 28–Foreign Minister Oskanian left for New York to participate in the proceedings of the United Nations General Assembly and to hold a series of bilateral meetings.

The delegation is due back to Armenia on October 2.
