Members of Writers Union Rally Around President

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"We must rally around the president to defend the constitutional order of Armenia and thereby safeguard the foundations of our statehood," Writers Union Secretary Abgar Apinian told reporters Tuesday on behalf of the Writers Union of Armenia.

"Life will enter its normal course–but unless we come to our senses today–the same bomb that blew up in our faces on October 27 and may blow up again," the Union representative said. The writers of Armenia regard the events as a crime aimed not only against the best sons of the Armenian people but also against Armenia’s statehood.

"The incident should not be presented as a reflection of the desires of our people. Our nation clearly condemns the killings as expressed by the crowds that came to pay tribute and bid farewell to the deceased. The criminals have nothing in common with us," said Apinian.

Before making his speech–Academician Levon Hakhverdian said he did not quite understand why the writers had gathered.

"The wound is still bleeding," he said–"while the sober assessment of the incident is impossible to give yet."

"Enormous polarization in our society coupled with unfair privatization could not but provoke a certain explosion," he added. Disagreeing with Abgar Apinian–Hakhverdian said that it is clear who were responsible for the crime–its perpetrators were Armenian.
