Kocharian Congratulates New Leaders of National Assembly

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–President Robert Kocharian congratulated the newly elected leaders of the National Assembly. The president also thanked the deputies for having taken major steps to end the current crisis in the country.

At a special session on November 2–the members of parliament elected Unity faction member Armen Khachatrian of the People’s Party of Armenia as National Assembly Speaker. Unity faction members Gagik Aslanian (PPA) and Tigran Torosian (Republican Party of Armenia) were elected National Assembly Deputy Speakers.

Unity faction leader Andranik Margarian said that the coordinating council consisting of the parliament’s various political forces agreed that the status quo should be maintained by electing leaders from the same parties that held the posts until October 27.

"The National Assembly is already capable of functioning normally and–most importantly–these decisions were made in a calm atmosphere–in an atmosphere of accord–which–I think–also shows that our state system is stable–that our state system and branches of power are able to overcome crisis situations," Kocharian said. "I think that it is more evidence that we are able to keep in line with the Constitution. It means that democracy in our country is becoming stronger," the president said. He also informed the deputies that a new prime minister and cabinet would be appointed in the coming days.

"We must do everything to overcome both this crisis and its consequences–which–I think–will be telling on nearly all the spheres of life in the republic for a long time," Kocharian concluded.
