Parliament Speaker Meets With French Ambassador

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–French Ambassador to Armenia Michel Legras held a meeting November 16 with Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Armen Khachatrian. During the meeting the French ambassador handed Khachatrian a message of congratulations from Speaker of the French Senate Christian Ponslet. Legras also invited Khachatrian to participate in a meeting of Parliament leaders from the three Transcaucasian countries in Paris mid-December. The French ambassador also handed Khachatrian a telegram of congratulations from Speaker of the French National Assembly Loran Fabius.

Congratulating Khachatrian on his appointment as Speaker of the Armenian Parliament–the French ambassador expressed confidence that the Parliament will continue its efficient activities.

Khachatrian pointed out that the killings on October 27 cannot affect the democratic processes in Armenia. He gave assurances that he will do everything possible to realize the programs of Karen Demirchian and Vazgen Sargsyan aimed at democratic development–economic liberalization and human rights protection. Khachatrian expressed the opinion that Armenia’should develop both political and economic cooperation with European countries. He emphasized the importance of Armenia becoming a member of the Council of Europe.

The speaker of the Armenian Parliament highly appraised Armenian-French relations–stressing the need for their development.
