Khachatur Abovian’s Bust Unveiled in Yerevan School

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A commemoration on the 190th birthday anniversary of the great Armenian writer and humanitarian Khachatur Abovian was held at the Yerevan Abovian school November 19.

Deputy Head of the Education Department–Yerevan Mayor’s Office–Silva Achoyan unveiled a bronze relief of Abovian. The relief was cast by the young sculptor Gagik Melikian. Thereafter the participants attended the ceremonial opening of a classroom named after the great writer. The opening was held by Leader of the Country of Law parliamentary faction Artur Bagdasarian who graduated from the Abovian school.

In her speech–Headmistress Irina Hakobian said that Abovian’s 190th anniversary coincided with the 75th anniversary of the naming the school. Established in 1832 as a district school–this center of education was re-organized into a gymnasium for men in 1881. In 1925–the school was named after the great writer Khachatur Abovian.
