Turkish Government Seizes Armenian Church

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Turkish authorities Wednesday seized the deeds and other relevant documen’s of the St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian church in Krikkhan–near Iskanderun–reported the Istanbul-based Jamanak newspaper.

The church–which has been a focus of attention by the Turkish-Armenian community was taken from under the community’s protection.

Turkish officials confiscated the deeds and documen’s from neighborhood council member Aboud Mardikian. Authorities have rationalized their action by saying Armenia’s no longer live in Krikkhan.

The matter was immediately reported to Arch. Mesrob Mutafyan the Armenian Patriarch of Istanbul–who in the past had addressed plans for the renovation of the church with local authorities.

Jamanak concluded by reporting that community leaders were looking for ways to reclaim the church from the authorities.
