Armenia’s Kurds Protest in Defense of Ocalan

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The "Kurdistan" committee representing the Kurdish community in Armenia organized on January 11 a demonstration of protest in front of the UN Armenia Office in defense of PKK Leader–Abdulah Ocalan. The demonstrators distributed leaflets entitled "Our leader is our hope and stronghold." The leaflets condemn Turkey and describe Ocalan as "a prophet personifying all the merits of the Kurdish people."

Talking to Noyan Tapan–the organizers of the demonstration said that Kurdish communities in many European countries also held similar demonstrations to exert pressure on the Turkish authorities. Turkish President Suleyman Demirel is expected to hold a meeting with the Turkish government members and leaders of political parties January 12 before making a final decision concerning Ocalan’s fate. To have the death sentence recalled–Ocalan’s lawyers applied to the Supreme Court of Turkey. But the sentence was not changed. Thus–the country’s president has the last say.

Both the UN office and the area near the US Embassy in Armenia were guarded. But the demonstrators did not go to the US Embassy.
