YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Armen Khachatrian held a meeting February 2 with a delegation of the Union of Nationalities of Armenia (UNA) headed by UNA Chairman Vladimir Chatoyev.
Khachatrian pointed out the importance of the UNA’s activities in Armenia and his high appreciation of the national minorities’ participation in Armenia’s public life. He stressed the Armenian authorities’ attitude to the national minorities–in particular–the measures aimed at preserving their languages–culture and education.
On the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the UNA establishment–the Parliament speaker presented his message to the delegation. In the message Khachatrian stressed the UNA’s efforts toward Armenia’s prosperity–its support in forming Armenia’s statehood. In his message the Parliament speaker expressed gratitude to the UNA for its assistance in developing the Armenia-Diaspora relations.
In his turn–Chatoyev outlined the activities of the organization and its problems to the Parliament speaker. He expressed the opinion that the law on national minorities should be adopted and amendmen’s to the Law on Public Organizations be made. He also expressed concern that the UNA has no premises today–which prevents its effective activities.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for State and Legal Affairs Victor Dallakian–who attended the meeting–pointed out the Parliament’s willingness to discuss the bills submitted by the UNA.
