ARF Delegation Meets With Kocharian Karekin II

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–President Robert Kocharian and leaders of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and other major issues at a meeting on Feb. 19.

ARF member Vahan Hovanessian commented that none of the peace proposals made by international mediators is acceptable to the Armenian side. The most recent peace plan by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe–based on the idea of a "common state," was largely accepted by the Kocharian administration.

The Armenian president has repeatedly called for a solution based on mutual compromise during a year-long series of direct talks with Azeri President Aliyev. Aliyev said on a visit to the United States earlier this week that the two sides were close to a peace deal before the October 27 assassinations in the Armenian parliament. During the meeting with Kocharian was briefed on the results of the ARF congress. The meeting also focused on the political and economic situation of Armenia.

A delegation of the ARF also visited the Mother See of St. Etchmiadzin on the morning of February 22 to have an hour’s talk with His Holiness Catholicos of All Armenia’s Karekin II. The delegation led by ARF Bureau Representative Hrant Markarian also included Bureau members Albert Ajemian–Vicken Hovsepian and ARF Executive Council of Armenia Representative Armen Rustamian. Also attending the meeting with the Catholicos was Acting Chairman of the State Department for Religious Affairs Levon Mkrtchian.

His Holiness welcomed the ARF Bureau Headquarters’ relocation to Yerevan–calling it beneficial from the viewpoint of all-national interests.
