Navasardian Comments On Current Situation of Press

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–President of the Yerevan Press Club (YPC) Boris Navasardian was a keynote speaker at the "Mass Media of the Republic of Armenia: legal issues" seminar organized February 25 by the Fridrich Ebert Fund and the "Accord" Center of Legal and Political Studies.

Describing the current situation of Armenia’s press–Navasardian stated that there was a decrease in its circulation. He stated the reason for the decline is that since 1992 the press has been gradually alienating itself from the public creating an independent sphere. Navasardian stated that the press is an appendage of the political sphere. Moreover–"a special code language has been developed which is only understandable to political figures. Navasardian said the press should be reverted to a tool of the public. He added that laws be adopted ensuring the development of the press as a free and liberal business.

"When the press becomes a self-righting business–it will really be the fourth estate," Navasardian said.
